Occupy Protests: A Common Family Perspective

Maggie and Don are simply a working class couple trying to survive living from paycheck to paycheck. Maggie is a receptionist at a local dentist’s office and Don is a plumber. They have worked hard but the economy has taken an unthinkably tough hit on their family. Neither has had a raise in the past two years, as prices continue to rise. Simply, watching the price of gas go up, while the major gas companies make record profits, helps fuel their anger toward the current economic system. Don tried to join the capitalistic system by attempting to start his own plumbing business, but the banks denied him a loan. These are the same banks that were bailed out by the federal government. They were too big to fail and he was too small to give a chance.

Maggie and Don are not radicals who are followers of Lenin or Mao; they didn’t even know who Mao was or where he lived.  They are common Americans getting rolled by a now corrupt system. Their frustrations at seeing the capitalist system manipulated in favor of the wealthy have grown to from frustratin to outright anger. They don’t want to be millionaires; they just want an equal shot at the “American Dream”. On a Saturday, last fall, Maggie went to an Occupy Protest and found the protesters were not kooks, but rather people like her, frustrated with the upper class manipulating the system at her expense. After, Don’s last rejection letter from a major financial bank, he finally became angry and joined the Occupy Protest movement. He realized, democrat or republican, the political elite were in the pockets of the financial elite. Something had to change, at one time one person could make a difference. The protests are the start of that change, once begun it can’t stopped as long as people still believe. One person, just one person, can stand up and be the leader that corrects the system.

  1. Perhaps the theme of this blog is that what people are craving for, what they really want, and are searching for is leadership. Not management, not a good looking person, or even a great personality or debater, but rather leadership. The kind that men and women would follow because that leader had "suffered" with them in the conditions of their conflict. One who would be a beacon of light in the darkness of the "night". One who seemingly knows the way in the fog of the "battle". It appears that in this blog the main charactors want to find someone to blame and the effort they would have expended to solve their problems, they chose to protest to blame and to become paralyzed by anger. What is really happening is that the main charactors and the rest of us is that the stage is being set for us to clammer for this leader that we are looking for. We will become so desperate that some counterfeit of a "leader" will come along and with smoke and mirrors(and a telepromptor) will sweep us off our feet and identify the real enemy that has been plagueing us for decades. We will share in the anger, blame the blameless and take reprisals, and so the end of the constitution men and women have lost their lives for on far away shores, lying in long forgotten graves. Their souls cry out for us to look back to the beginnings of this great nation. Because after all "WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF EVIDENT".... The denial of this and HIM who inspired it spells the downfall of a nation,

  2. It seems that the above post sees a different motive from the principalities in high places. The couple in the blog are angry at the player on the stage of life and do not see in the back ground the real puppet masters who behind the scenes control the strings of the puppets(politicians). The real question is what can we do as idividuals to stop what is happening to our nation? What is the end game of the puppet masters? Can we unite to stop this progressive train? We can like the couple in the blog join in the protest against the supposed enemy and place blame on those whom we are led to beleive are motivated by greed or we can unmask the players, invest in America, and most of all, defend the Constitution for which as the above post said so many have died for.
